This is Why Social Media Feels Like a Waste of Time
“Social media is a waste of time” is the number one complaint I hear from business owners when it comes to social media and therefore the biggest barrier to success. Social media can require a lot of time - if you don’t have a plan in place. And if you feel like you’re not getting anything back for your efforts, then it certainly feels like (and in fact is) not a good use of your time.
Here are the biggest reasons you’re spending too much time on social media.
You haven’t gotten clear on your goals. You are using social media because you feel like you should or someone told you that you need to but you haven’t ever figured out why you want it to do for you and your business or what the end goal is.
You’re not on the right social media channels or you are trying to be on too many. You should be on channels that your ideal clients are on or the people you are wanting to attract and work with.
You don’t have clarity on your brand, your services, what makes you unique or how you want to talk about yourself which makes knowing what to post and how to write captions realllllly hard. (If you tend to write and then rewrite and then delete captions altogether and not post - this is probably you.)
You don’t have a plan or a system and are trying to do social on the fly. This wastes so much time and brainpower. If this sounds like you, grab my free content map to develop your posting plan and never guess what to post again.
But the good news, social media doesn’t have to require a lot of time. And when you start to get results for the time you put in, it can be very rewarding! Here are a few ways to save time on social media:
Start small and build - one channel at a time. You don’t need to be on 7 social media channels. Especially if you are just starting out. Pick one channel that you know your audience is on and start there. Once you start showing up consistently and getting results, add another channel one.
Repurpose your content: There has never been an easier time to repurpose video than now. All the social media platforms are favoring short form, vertical video including: Facebook, Instagram, Linkedin, YouTube, Pinterest, TikTok. Create one 60 second video and post it to whichever channels you are on. Remember it is more than just social. Take it a step further and share your content on your website and in an email. Stop trying to get more and more content and instead focus on creating one great piece of content that you can repurpose.
Schedule your posts. By using a content calendar, you can plan out your posts for the week or the month and schedule them out. This one simple act can save you so much time.
